The Peace & Satisfaction That Comes When You Invite Him In

I just caught myself…

Going about my day without inviting the LORD in.

Feed baby: check.

Make a coffee: check.

Make breakfast: check.

Water the plants: check.

Clean the stove: *brain finally wakes up and remembers to invite the LORD into that moment.*

And there it is…

A peace, purpose, and satisfaction with what I’m doing.

Monotonous as my morning was, it immediately became worship when I invited the LORD in.

It reminds me of what I just read in The Divine Conspiracy (a masterpiece of a book by Dallas Willard).

Willard writes of a man named Frank Laubach, a fellow spokesman for Christ:

“In January of 1930 he [Laubach] began to cultivate the habit of turning his mind to Christ for one second out of every minute. After only four weeks he reported, “I feel simply carried along each hour, doing my part in a plan which is far beyond myself. This sense of cooperation with God in little things is what so astonishes me, for I never have felt it this way before. I need something, and turn round to find it waiting for me. I must work, to be sure, but there is God working along with me”” (The Divine Conspiracy, 24).

Willard calls this a “personal experiment of moment-by-moment submission to the will of God.”

What a beautiful way to exist this side of heaven—inviting the Creator of this universe into every part of our day, “one second out of every minute.”

Oh how our lives would transform by doing this!

One last thing…

I shared this story of Laubach with some ladies at church tonight, and one of them sweetly reminded me that if we’re believers, then Jesus is always with us—whether we consciously “invite Him in” or not.

That’s the beauty of believing in Jesus: we’re never alone.

But if I’m being honest, I don’t live like I truly believe this.

If I did believe it—like, really believe it—then anxiety wouldn’t have a hold of my heart so many days of the week. The things of this world wouldn’t sway me. My emotions wouldn’t rule me.

That’s why I love this exercise of “inviting Him in.”

Sure, He is always with us.

But we often frenzy about our day like He isn’t.

So I encourage you…

When you’re making a coffee, driving to work, running errands, going on a walk…invite Him in.

When you have company over, ask Him to fill that space.

Just like Paul tells us in Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

And again in 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Whatever we do, we are to welcome Him into that space and moment.

And when you do, I guarantee you’ll feel His peace wash over you.

Lastly, I’ll close with this verse from Romans:

“If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” —Romans 8:11

He dwells in us! Now let us live like so!
